UNMASK

Hello good people. :)

Hope you have all been well. Remember the 1994 movie “The Mask” starring Jim Carey where the bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss is transformed into a manic super-hero when he wears a mysterious mask and without it he was normal? Well I do, in case you didn’t watch it or weren’t born then you can Google and see what the movie was about. That’s what is happening to most of us. We are putting on masks to cover so much which makes us feel superficial for a short time then when we remove the masks we are back to normal.

Today, I would like to address some social issues as youth (me included) and parents to teenagers are going through. (I promised I would write about parenting in my first post J) Well, I want to illustrate using two stories what you probably don’t know or know but ignore or it may just be happening around you. So here we go;

Illustration 1
The other day I was talking to my two friends who are teachers and they were explaining to me how bad the situation has become in schools especially where kids from well up families go to. It was very sad to learn that teenagers of about 14-18 years can tell a teacher words that I can’t even write here on their face without shame. I remember in my days you wouldn’t even look at the teacher sometimes when they were reprimanding you. Some of these kids are also engaging in adulterous activities and while their parents are aware they do nothing about it. The same parents also finance their children to partake in alcoholism and some grown up social functions where drinking is involved and this has even become a common excuse for missing school. It is quite a sad state of affairs.

Illustration 2
I meet this girl at a social function and she is amazing I will call her Suzan for now. Suzan is beautiful, smart, and funny. Suzan is in her early 30’s.She is struggling with alcohol and being ratchet because anytime she has a problem she runs to get a bottle and the eventually in the process engages in extracurricular activities with several men. This amazing girl is having a problem dealing with her problems and how she deals with it is making the situation worse. As we speak, this awesome soul has drunk so much of her cash and has nothing to show for what she has worked for. She is also constantly going to get checked if she has contracted HIV or other horrible infections.

Fairy Mask Illusion

My two cents on this whole issue is please PARENTS make time for your children get involved find out what is going on in your kids lives also, you need to ask yourself what kind of an example you are for your kids. Would you be proud of them being an exact replica of your character? Think about it. Money cannot replace time for them. It’s actually the substitute that is causing all these problems and eventually it is going to bite you. One teacher was telling me how one of her students was complaining that she is not given enough money for shopping. Enough here means 25,000 in my days 2,000 was to cater for a whole term inclusive of shopping and pocket money. Again, I don’t know about you guys but the cane has been forgotten and this thing for “stand in the corner and think about what you have done” could be contributing to this disgusting lot of kids. The saying “spare the rod spoil the child.” This is exactly what is happening. Also, parents please stop burdening teachers with your responsibilities they are now the ones dealing with the crap (for lack of a better word) that you aren’t dealing with. For the parents that are actually doing something about these issues well done and keep it up.

Suzan my friend on the other hand has major issues and doesn’t know how to deal with them. Which is a very common problem among our youth now. People are dealing with issues in all the wrong things. How about getting a hobby, exercising, reaching out and talking to someone, church (yea I know but trust it helps) praying, talking to friends an older person or someone that just cares about your well being? Eventually this way of  ”dealing” is exactly why many of the youth are getting depressed, suicidal etc. Let’s look out for each other and stop masquerading real issues. (I hope this post has helped someone)

Disclaimer: This has been the hardest post I have ever had to write but someone has got to say something right? Also, I hope that it helps someone somewhere.

Thanks for stopping by :)

Blessings,
Miss Wainaina.

Anyway, exactly a month ago was my birthday  and I think this it the best yet, with two surprise birthdays lots of gifts which (fyi) am still accepting till the end of the year :D. Enough about me :) lets talk about Maisha. Maisha is a 7 month course which is offered every year at the Intercontinental hotel monthly for young professionals. It's organized by the Strathmore Business School (special programs)..  A couple of weeks ago, I was invited for one of the classes and my oh my wasn't it awesome.

What I picked from the class was that sometimes as a young person its great to seat together and talk about real issues that are facing us then have an older moderator( who is not your parent) come and tell you the truth from experience.

This particular class was about "We're Living Together" which basically was about come we stay. It was quite interesting hearing the diverse views from my peers during the round table discussion before going for the moderated session with an amazing Counselor who has five kids and looks like she's 21 (best believe it) . She was very honest regarding issues about marriage and well we all felt like our toes were  being stepped on at some point.:)

Anybody interested in applying for this class please don't hesitate to let me know.

Have an amazing month ahead.. Baraka!!

Reality Check

Hey good people,

Been a minute :) hope you're all good as I have been. Soo today I just want to highlight some experiences I have had since I left campus which is about exactly a year ago. I'm also just about to turn (ahemhem) so I have been trying to reflect on the past one year outside school...

As usual, we all really get excited to finally finish school and graduate and finally start working ( for those who weren't working while still in school). I don't know about you guys, but for me, I thought once I finish school I would get a really nice job and earn a six figure salary, own my car in like three months, move out in like six months, get engaged in like a year; like I had my whole life all planned out hahahahaha!!! Then reality happened....

But when you get out life is like "no girl noo!!! That is not what is going to happen just yet". First the tarmacking process hits you hard and you send and send and drop and write like a mille versions of your resume and there is no response or all you get is "we apologize to inform you...." or some positions expect you to have a certain number of years in experience which most definitely you don't have. (Though this is different for some people who are really lucky who land their dream jobs on the first application)

So, you try and try and after a while bam! You land a job and the pay isn't the six figure or five figure; leave alone the four figure you expected. But well, at least you are getting experience at this point for most guys they are down for whatever because anyway it’s the experience that matters.

Back to the social scene, your friends are busy getting babies and lifelong commitments and you are wondering what you were doing with your life while they got there.

Don't despair if this is you because God has an amazing plan for each one of us. Everybody has their own path .You may not be where you want to be yet but what is most important is what you do with your time before you get to where you want to be. Life isn't a bed of roses as someone said but enjoy the journey and embrace the "yes" that life gives you ,accept the "no's" and don't give up on the "wait" because in due time God shows up at the eleventh hour.

Thanks for dropping by :)

What they dont tell you about your 20's

Hi people,

Its been a minute.. Time is really flying just wanted to share some of the lessons I have learnt from my 20's. These are my 2 cents opinions so you don't have to necessarily agree.

1. Those years literally fly.... I was 20 some years back and my oh my has time flown.

2. Travel, see your country/ world its good to be away from the norm. It has an effect I just cant put it in words (hahaha!) but its a good feeling it somehow renews your strength and broadens your mind.

3. Spend time with small kids under 5. These kids spread so much joy and they have a way of spreading it. You will also learn a thing or 2.

4. Spend time with older people. Sometimes getting advise from our folks can be monotonous and irritating (I know am speaking for the masses) cause they think they know whats best for us but sometimes its good to experiment and just make your own mistakes. Its a conflict of  interests so to speak. Its good to just get other wise older people to talk to and mentor you.

 5. Drinking alcohol is not bad. Its the things you do when you're drunk that makes it bad or even how much you spend on it.(For me the math dint make sense so I opted out) again does it add value?
(well it dint for me in fact it subtracted a lot of things soo I opted for stronger stuff like Jesus lol!)

and also the quantities I think ( I do wine once in a while which reminds me I don't mind a bottle of wine as a gift for my birthday lol! )

6.You will fall in and out of love... (this isn't for everyone) but you don't have to settle for anything less than you deserve.Actually the early 20's are a really good time to discover yourself and make yourself the one.

 7. Volunteer. This is the most fulfilling thing you can do. Giving back feels amazing try it and if you need ideas please get in touch. I have  small projects coming up.

8.Invest and Save. Yea imagine its important. A pal of mine is always laughing at the way am always saying that am saving yet my bank account disagrees hahaha!! but its important to do so ( there could be rainy days or a time when you will need it. ) Also we are already grown up so there is nothing like  " when I grow up I will do this or that" the time is now.

9. Network. Meet new people and keep their contacts you never know how they may help you despite their position now.

10.Family. Make some time for these precious constants in your life.

11.God. Try and make him number one create a relationship with this guy you can never go wrong. This should actually be number one.

12.Dont give up. You may not be where you want to be but time changes a lot of things so keep trying.

13. Study. Education is one of the most important things. You educate yourself , you empower yourself.

14. Read book/ blogs/journals / magazines. Anything that makes you happy its a good recreational activity broadens your vocabulary and improves your writing especially for this "xaxa"generation. That xaxa thing by the way is very irritating and annoying .

15.Adventure. Try new things don't be afraid just do it. It will be worth while and you have nothing to lose :)

16. Write your goals and dreams and keep refferring to them to see the progress you  are making.
You can also break down your goals. ( yes its cliche but actually doing it works.)

Thanks for taking time to read.

Yours Truly,
Miss Wainaina :)

PURPOSE

Hello Good People!!!

Been a minute lately I have been feeling like am rushing against time trying to balance everything out. Anyway my apologies for the silence.Today I just want to briefly talk about purpose which is a topic I have been thinking about for a while.

So what is purpose? different people have different definitions of purpose but for me I would say it is what you were born to be or become.I would also ask do you know your purpose? (This is also something I have been trying to figure out lately)

All I know is that its important to know your purpose so that you don't waste so much time doing something you were not meant to do or be a person you are not meant to be.

My prayer is that you may find your purpose and you may find fulfillment in your purpose.

Best Regards,
Ivy
